Physical Education
As part of our commitment to educating the whole child, Almaden Country School offers Physical Education as an element of its regular curriculum. Developmentally appropriate programs have been designed for the Early Childhood, Elementary and Middle Schools. With ECE for example, children participate in weekly movement lessons where music is integral to their activity. The Elementary School plan is based on continuous movement lessons that offer fitness training, gross motor development, lead-up games to team sports, and fitness testing. The Middle School program further expands on these to include “Fitness for Life” studies and team sports. The goal for all levels is to provide exposure to and encourage competence in a variety of activities— all while instilling a joy of movement and achieving improved fitness.

After School Athletics and Intramural Sports
ACS also offers an after-school athletics and intramural sports program for grades 5-8. It is designed largely to promote the values of sportsmanship and camaraderie. We also believe that participating in sports helps set a foundation for an enjoyable and healthy lifestyle as children, and eventually as well-rounded adults.

The ACS Cougars participate as a member school in the Silicon Valley Athletic League (SVAL).  Any student in grades 5-8 can sign up and compete on a team. We do not cut. There are two divisions: 5th and 6th graders play in the ‘C’ division; 7th and 8th graders play in the ‘A’ division. Currently, the sports we offer are boys flag football in the fall, boys and girls basketball in the winter, and co-ed track and field in the spring.

ACS teams have experienced a great deal of success, winning league championships at all levels of play. The ‘A’ and ‘C’ football teams for example, have won the SVAL championship five of the last seven years. We’re proud of all our student athletes. We encourage everyone to participate in our after-school sports program to take advantage of this enriching aspect of the ACS experience.
